GHOSTING X STYLES P
Release Date: 7.9.21
Number of Tracks: 14
Duration: 40 Min
Favorite Track: Time Traveler, Stop
The Rain
In my countless hours of listening
to the Jet Life crew, there have been many a feature, some of which are
reoccurring. And while Styles P is a well-known member of The LOX, it was
through the afore mentioned features that I was introduced to the NY rapper.
And it was because of his performances on these tracks that I started checking
for his solo projects.
When it comes to his time with The
LOX, Styles P checks all the boxes. When it comes to his run as a solo artist
however, his records become very hit or miss. We here at ORR are here to tell
you today that Ghosting is one of
those hits.
Let’s get right into it.
Feel
The best way I can think
to describe Ghosting from Styles P is
passive aggressive. The feel of the album is smooth, almost calming, however
the self-proclaimed “Ghost,” is bringing real pressure with the bars. The skits
are there, but are funny enough not to completely hamper the album. With a
smooth and consistent flow combined with timely, accurate production, Ghosting feels like it is right on time.
Lyrics
By far the strength of
the album, Ghost packs each track with the bars. Styles is a rapper who can be
put under a microscope for a bar exam and will pass every single time. When his
cadence is combined with his content, he can go bar for bar with any rapper.
“Seen the sucka shit come
in my nigga, I elevated – You should see the deals in business I delegated –
Focused in, went hard, even hella faded.” – Styles P, Time Travler.
And while there are a few
features throughout the album, I have not heard of a single artist, nor were
any performances noteworthy to mention.
Production
A clear strength of the
album, the production fits well with the entire project, without a single beat
feeling forced or out of place. When it comes to riding a beat, Ghost is ELITE,
and Ghosting is a prime example of
that. The downside of the ride however, is that there is not much offered in
terms of anything to get you amp.
Overall
Ghosting is an album that deserves a ton of attention and credit to
Styles, however I fear this may not be the case in the mainstream media. When
the album was announced, he posted a snippet of Stop the Rain set to the backdrop of Vader’s slaughter of rebel
troops in Rouge One, and I knew the
album was going to be tough. Ghosting
did not disappoint, and is definitely a hit for the veteran NY rapper. With a
smooth cadence, thoughtful bars, and a consistent ride set by the production,
Styles P warrants attention outside of his time with the LOX and that is on
full display with his latest album. We here at ORR definitely recommend giving
it a spin for your mid-2021 spins.
The album in a word: Ghost!
