UNTRAPPED X YO GOTTI
Release Date: 1.31.2020
Number of Tracks: 15
Duration: 52 MIN
Favorite Track: WEEKEND
There are many categories that a
rapper can be put in. The latest (and most scrutinized) class of “mumble
rappers,” seems to have tapered off in 2020, and so too has the corresponding
uproar or backlash about it. With the release of Daytona in 2018, Pusha T was crowned as the head of the “drug
rappers.” Oracle Rap Reviews would argue that that crown belonged to one Yo
Gotti. Hitting the scene in 2009 with his hit single “Women Lie, Men Lie,” Yo Gotti was able to create his own label,
Cocaine Music Group, otherwise known as CMG. Headlined by Blac Youngsta and
Moneybagg Yo, CMG is now a well-established label in its own right. And it
seems that in 2020, Yo Gotti has shifted his focus from drugs to teaching the
youth, and with his recent release of Untrapped,
he finds himself up next for our first review of the New Year.
FEEL
Usually, Yo Gotti projects make you
feel like you could go cook your own drugs your kitchen like slanging dope was
your reality. The feel of Untrapped
is a lot different than the a-typical CMG record however, as the founder is
extremely transparent on the album. It feels more like a lesson, and this is
highlighted by the track, “Big Homie
Rules,” as Gotti gives instruction on what it means to be a big homie. You can
also feel the shift in his focus, as he has new aspirations of being a better businessman,
a better leader for his people, and more like his own big homie, Jay Z.
LYRICS
Untrapped is
still not devoid of the afore mentioned street bars however, as this is where
the brunt of Gotti’s experience has been. The album is feature heavy, with
appearances from Lil Baby, Megan Thee Stallion, Rick Ross, and Estelle just to
name a few. Moneybagg Yo secures the spot for best feature, on the track “Weekend.” Our favorite bar can be found
below.
“You just like yo father and he was
a rat, so that means he raising a mice.” – Yo Gotti, Put a Date on it
PRODUCTION
Yo Gotti is known for his excellent
beat selection, even if it is inherently limited to the style of music that he
makes. Nevertheless, a rap album must have beats that knock, and Untrapped is certainly that.
STREETRUNNER and Ben Billions make up the list of most used producers across the
album, with the young superstar Tay Keith making a guest appearance. Quite a
few of the tracks are beat-down-the-block worthy, and can get you ready for
that morning grind or workout. The production on Untrapped is certainly a strong point of the album.
OVERALL
During his interview with The Breakfast
Club, Yo Gotti was quoted as saying, “I am not a rapper, I am an entrepreneur.”
This shift in focus is evident on Untrapped,
as the album is surprisingly thoughtful. It is not devoid of the usual bangers
that can be expected from a Yo Gotti project however, with an A-Class list of
features and excellent production. If he continues to put projects out similar
to this one, it will be hard to call him a drug rapper much longer. Oracle Rap
Reviews awards Yo Gotti’s Untrapped a
score of 10 out of the 15 total tracks, and deems it a must listen for your
early 2020 rotation.
